Founded in 2021, SSB began as a league within the Adult Division of Beaufort County Parks & Recreation. Two years later in Fall 2023, SSB transitioned to a private league and began play on Barker Field with the support of the Hilton Head Island Recreation Center. In the summer of 2025, SSB organized as a non-profit corporation.
All our teams are built with a goal of parity through an annual draft process. At the conclusion of each season, Fall and Spring, players are rated from 1 to 5 on 5 skills (hitting, hitting for power, fielding, throwing and running) by their managers. To this group are added new players who are required to showcase their softball skills during scheduled pre-season sessions. Finally, returning players from prior seasons are added to the mix. All players (current, lapsed or new) are required to register for each season, Spring and Fall. The annual draft is conducted on the players registered for the Fall season. Each Spring new players are evaluated and then drafted onto existing teams based on need.
Team rosters are built to foster friendships, fun and healthy competition with rules adapted to make the game safe for seniors.
